He Was Waiting for the Witch

Brian Armer

On the porch, a small blue monster held an empty pumpkin bucket and watched the neighborhood Halloween parade begin without him. His big sister had promised to walk with him. He did not care who had the best costume. He wanted his witch.

Across town, her wrestling practice had run longer than she expected. She kept glancing at the witch hat tucked beside her things, thinking of her little brother in the fuzzy costume he had insisted on wearing for the early-season parade. When the session ended, the others talked about the next drill. She was already imagining his face at the door.

Before leaving, she took a moment for her usual post-practice skin care with her prepared spray. Then she gathered her things, put on the hat and cape, and hurried home to the little boy waiting for her.

Her brother was still at the door when the witch arrived. He recognized the shoes beneath the cape first, then ran straight into her arms. “I knew you'd come,” he said. The costume parade had already started, but the best part of his Halloween had been waiting right there on the porch.

They set off past smiling pumpkins and neighbors dressed as friendly creatures. He held his bucket in one hand and his sister's hand in the other. She was the witch he'd asked for, the wrestler who had kept her promise, and his favorite person to walk beside.
