Small Dog. Big Dog Energy.

Brian Armer

Biscotti is a French bulldog. He weighs 22 pounds. His ears are bigger than his confidence should allow, and his legs are about four inches long. None of that matters. When Biscotti walks into the city dog park, he walks in like he owns it.

THE LEADER OF THE PACK

Every Saturday morning, the Morales family walks Biscotti three blocks to the park. Twelve-year-old Diego holds the leash. His little sister Lucia carries the ball. And every Saturday, the same thing happens. The gate opens, Biscotti snorts once, and every dog in the park turns to look.

A husky named Blue. A lab named Tucker. A greyhound who can run forty miles an hour. They all fall in line behind a dog the size of a bowling ball.

THE ZOOMIES

Then it begins. Biscotti takes off in a wild circle around the park, snorting like a tiny steam engine, the whole pack chasing behind him. Lap one. Lap two. On lap three, he tried to take the turn by the water fountain at full speed.

He did not make the turn.

Biscotti slid across the gravel on his elbows like a baseball player stealing second. He popped right back up, snorted proudly, and kept going. Diego laughed so hard he had to sit down on the bench.

THE WALK HOME

But on the walk home, Lucia noticed. The gravel had left Biscotti's elbows scraped, dry, and rough. And after a morning of leading the pack, the little guy was finally tired. He sat down on the sidewalk and refused to walk another step. Diego carried him the rest of the way home like a sack of potatoes.

Every small-dog parent knows it. They give everything they have, even when everything they have is only 22 pounds.

At home, Mom grabbed AniSport Companion Gentle Wound Balm. Lucia held Biscotti in her lap while Mom added a thin layer to each elbow for barrier conditioning and moisture. Biscotti snored through the whole thing.

THE CITY DOG KIT

NEXT SATURDAY

By Friday night, Biscotti was sitting by the front door with his leash in his mouth, staring at Diego, snorting softly.

Saturday morning came. The gate opened. Every dog in the park turned to look.

Small dog. Big dog energy. Back on the job.
