Tex has never taken a day off in his life. The blue heeler is up before the rooster, standing at the back door of the Delgado ranch house with his ears straight up and his tail going like a metronome. There are cattle to move. THE TINY FOREMAN

By sunrise, Tex has already moved twenty head of cattle to the north pasture, checked the chicken coop twice, and herded twelve-year-old Rosa from the barn to the feed shed. Rosa says he is the real boss of the ranch. Her dad does not argue.

That morning, one stubborn calf slipped toward a gap in the old fence. Tex shot after it like a rocket. He turned the calf back in two seconds flat, but the barbed wire caught his shoulder on the way through and left a fresh scrape.
