Who Makes Sure You’re Looked After?
The last wrestler left with her shoes over one shoulder, calling, “See you Monday, Coach!” Mara lifted a hand from the equipment cart. Then the door shut, and the room finally stopped asking things of her.
Closing was her job tonight. She gathered the towels, returned the loaner gear, and wrestled a stubborn zipper shut. All afternoon she had counted partners, corrected footwork, and noticed the quiet kid who needed someone to choose her first. Now her phone lit up beside the timer: a picture of her son at the kitchen table, guarding two bowls of soup. He says yours is the bigger one.
Mara smiled and reached for her prepared skin spray. Beside it was the concentrate bottle she had used to make the mixture. She picked that up and read the ingredients.
Tea tree oil. She knew the name. What she wanted to know was why it belonged in the blend. She opened the ingredient research she had bookmarked on her phone. Terpinen-4-ol. She mouthed the name once, grateful nobody was there to grade her pronunciation.
The tea tree review described laboratory experiments in which the compound interfered with bacterial membranes, allowing material to leak out and disrupting cell function. Mara pictured a boundary that did more than hold everything together. It kept the inside organized. Disturb that boundary, and the machinery behind it could struggle too.
So tea tree isn’t just there for the smell. She glanced at the concentrate bottle. The experiments weren’t a test of her finished spray; the mixture and concentration still mattered. But now she understood something about the thought behind that ingredient, rather than simply recognizing its name.
That was enough science for tonight. Her soup had a security guard, and he was probably getting hungry.
Before heading home, Mara used the skin spray she had prepared with Zombie’s Infusion Hygienic Concentrate according to its directions. She put the bottle away and made her final check of the room. Tomorrow there would be another missed step, another good takedown and another chance to notice who needed a partner.
Tonight, she switched off the lights. At the door, her phone buzzed again. He’s still guarding your soup. For once, somebody else was making sure she was looked after.
