The Halloween Dragon Who Wouldn't Leave Grandpa Behind
The little dragon refused to start the neighborhood Halloween costume walk without Grandpa. He had practiced his roar all afternoon, but now he sat beside the porch bench and kept one small hand wrapped around the wizard's sleeve.
Grandpa had been carrying a carved pumpkin to the front step when he tripped on the edge of the porch. He caught himself against the railing, and the rough wood left a shallow cut across his hand. He sat down to check it while the friendly ghosts and witches from down the street passed under the autumn lights. The child held up his dragon wings and said they could wait.
Grandpa took a moment to clean and care for his hand, then cover the cut. Beside him, the dragon stayed close, perfectly willing to let the parade get a little farther ahead. There was no hurry worth leaving his wizard behind.
The dragon inspected Grandpa's starry hat, then offered his tiny clawed glove to help him up. Grandpa stood when he was ready, took the hand, and stepped off the porch slowly beside him. No wizard spell had fixed the evening. They had made time for care and kept the promise to walk together.
Along the path, pumpkin faces glowed and friendly costumes drifted between porches. The little dragon roared for every neighbor, but saved his biggest smile for the wizard at his side. That was the Halloween story he wanted to tell again.
