Costumes On, Germs Out: A Parent's Halloween Game Plan

Brian Armer

HAPPY HALLOWEEN, MONSTER FAMILIES!

It is the last practice before trick-or-treating, and the youth wrestling room looks like a comic book convention came to life. A six-year-old Batman is doing somersaults in his cape. Twin witches are racing each other across the mat. And in the middle of it all is Leo, seven years old, in a green dinosaur hood he has flat-out refused to take off since Tuesday.

His mom, Jess, is leaning in the doorway with a bag of candy waiting in the car. Coach blows the whistle. "Costume sharks and minnows!" The whole room cheers.

THE THOUGHT EVERY PARENT HAS

Jess is smiling, but there is a little thought in the back of her head. Two hundred busy little hands. One shared mat. A whole pile of borrowed capes. She loves this sport for Leo. She just wants tonight to be the best night of the season, not the start of a week in the stands.

Here is the good news. Keeping kids in the fun does not take fear, lectures, or a hazmat suit. It takes a few habits that become as automatic as grabbing a water bottle. Staph is common on skin and shared surfaces, and close contact, shared gear, and small scrapes all raise the exposure, according to the CDC. That is not a reason to skip practice. It is a reason to train smart.

THE DINOSAUR'S BIG DIVE

Halfway through sharks and minnows, Leo the dinosaur makes a heroic dive for the wall and slides across the mat on one knee. He jumps right back up, roars, and then notices the pink scrape. His lip starts to wobble.

Jess is already there. She pulls a small bottle of NutriCore Vital Recovery Spray from her bag. "Watch this. I do not even have to touch it." Point. Spray. Done. No fuss, no hunting for a sink. Apple cider vinegar with the mother starts cleaning on contact, then tea tree, helichrysum, and frankincense oils move into barrier and recovery support.

Leo looks at his knee, looks at his mom, and roars again. Crisis over. Back to the game.

THE MONSTER FAMILY GAME PLAN

  • The Speedy Shower: shower as soon as possible after practice, before the candy run.
  • One Monster, One Towel: never share towels, uniforms, headgear, or capes that touched the mat.
  • The Laundry Spell: wash and fully dry practice clothes and costumes after every session.
  • Scrape Patrol: catch every scrape, mat burn, or turf burn early and give it care right away.
  • Speak Up Squad: teach your athlete to tell you about any spot that looks or feels different.

WHY ZOMBIE BUILT A ROUTINE, NOT JUST A PRODUCT

Zombie Sport Co was built by a family that refused to let one scrape take a kid out of the sport they love. It starts with Infusion Hygienic Concentrate. Add one quarter of the 2 oz bottle to a spray, body wash, or lotion you already use. A quick spray before practice and a spray off after means Leo is not bringing the mat home to his little sister. For irritated skin from headgear and friction, Regenerate RX Protect and Restore Balm goes on after practice. And for chapped, wind-bitten lips after trick-or-treating, Zombie Lips has them covered.

Step inside The Ingredient Lab and see what is inside every Zombie formula.

If a spot shows spreading redness, swelling, warmth, or fever, that is your cue to call your healthcare provider. Early care keeps the whole team on the mat.

THE BEST PART OF THE NIGHT

Practice ends. Everyone showers, towels go into their own bags, and the whole crew heads out the door in capes and fangs with pillowcases ready. Leo finally takes off his dinosaur hood, just long enough to put on his dinosaur trick-or-treat hood.

Tomorrow, they are all back on the mat. That is the real treat.
