For 45 years, Mike McKinney trained to move when other people could not. He stayed ready for the calls, the stairs, the gear, the chaos, and the moments that demanded more than most people ever see. Then he found a new trail.

THE MISSION CHANGED. THE PURPOSE DID NOT.

Retirement did not turn Mike into someone who wanted to sit still and watch the world go by. After a lifetime as a first responder, he knew his body and heart both needed a new reason to move. So he went outside. He started hiking, canoeing, and training. He joined his local Community Emergency Response Team, took additional EMS training, and found a new crew through the 52 Hike Challenge. One mile outside each week became more than exercise. It became direction.

A life of service does not have to end when one chapter closes. Sometimes it finds a new uniform.

Today, Mike helps lead the 52 Hike Challenge North Carolina Chapter, planning hikes, welcoming new people, building partnerships, and helping others discover what happens when they step outside and keep moving.

THE NEW VERSION OF READY

This is why Mike belongs in the Zombie world. Zombie is not only for the person in the cage, on the mat, or under the bar. It is for the person who still wants to live with purpose, whose next mission might be a trail, a community, a dog waiting by the door, or a new group of friends who need someone to say let's go. The Zombie system belongs in the pack, truck, trail kit, and everyday routine of people who know adventure does not retire. Before the hike, prepare. During the miles, stay ready. After the climb, protect the return, because the next trail is already out there.
